Do you struggle (like me!) to find a perfect gift for certain people in your life – IE: mother in law, sister, aunt, etc?!

Well, I received the sweetest, coziest, comfiest gift from my parents over Christmas – The Giving Shawl. And so now I just have to share with you, because I feel like it makes an amazing gift for that someone in your life (sister, mom, grandmother, aunt, friend, sis-in-law, MIL) that you adore, but maybe live far away from. Ok, real quick I wanted to send y’all my favorite 3 books I’m absolutely devouring so far in 2019. These are perfect for you, mama, because the first 2 are super short passages and/or chapters that you actually can find the time to read because it takes about 3 minutes! lol!

First up – The Daily Soul Sessions books (obvi!)

If your pregnant – get The Daily Soul Sessions For The Pregnant Mama. If you’re not pregnant – get The Daily Soul Sessions For Every Mama. The short, daily inspirations are so refreshing and comforting. I’ve loved diving back into my pregnancy book. It reminds me that I’m not alone in my feelings (hello hormones!) and that it’s ok to miss the woman I used to be. She is still there. I just have to work a little bit harder to honor her, remember her, and bring her back by being creative, positive, and inspired!

Second – Maria Shriver’s “I’ve Been Thinking”

This book is just awesome. Short chapters with titles like “The Power Of Faith”, and “I’m Who I Choose To Become”, and “The Power Of Letting Go” to name a few are incredibly inspiring and encouraging. This woman has been through a lot, and she’s come out on the other side with so much wisdom and kindness that I’m simply devouring her words. You will too, I know it!

Third – Lysa Terkeurst’s “The Best Yes”

Lysa Terkeurst is a Christian author and I really enjoy her writing style. She tells inspiring, real stories that help me relate to my every day problems and concerns. This book is all about “making wise decisions in the midst of endless demands” which LORD knows I need help with! I get paralyzed with indecision – do you? Lately I’ve been realizing that when I’m stuck in that limbo of not being able to make a decision, it’s because I’m letting myself be led by all the noise and chaos and media and social media around me. Instead of quietly going inside of myself and letting spirit lead me. This book is helping me take ownership of that.

5 Things you must have when you're pregnant

Well, third time must be a charm, because here it is, mama – the 5 Things You Must Have When You’re Pregnant. It’s only taken me…ohhhh, 22 months of pregnancy (I have 2 kids, and one on the way) to whittle this list down to my favorites!

1.) An Inspiring Pregnancy Book

The Daily Soul Sessions For The Pregnant Mama book is the one thing I read every single day to get my mind and my heart right. I want to feel connected to my little peanut inside, but I also want to remember the woman I was before the label mom took over my entire existence! And this book does that – it’s short, inspiring messages for each day of your pregnancy. It helps you stay positive, stay mindful, and stay creative during these most creative and amazing 9 months!

2.) Comfy CUTE Shoes

Ok, so as we keep growing and growing with each passing day – ahem – month, it’s important to hold onto a few things from our previous life. Or even add something amazing to our previous life – and the easiest way to do this is with shoes! lol – I know, it’s a bit vain, but when we have some cute shoes on, it makes the bump feel even better! The key is comfort, as you know, and these wedge sneaks are AMAZING! See the pic above – Supes cute. And I can wear them literally all day long without my feel hurting.

3.) An Amazing Blender

Yep. An amazing blender is for sure a necessity! So go ahead and ask for that Vitamix for your birthday or whatever holiday is fast approaching, because smoothies are the best when you’re preggo. A couple of my favorites are the Glowing Green Smoothie and the Almond Milk Breakfast Smoothie. 

4.) Pillows. And Then More Pillows

There comes a point in every pregnancy when you simply need all the pillows. Seriously – I bogart every single pillow from all the unused beds when I hit, ohhhh about 12 weeks! I now sleep in a throne-like position. This means I have the large Euro pillow in back, then 2 normal queen pillows piled against that, a 3rd queen pillow propped up above the 2 other queens (for my head, obvi), and THEN I have 2 king pillows – one on either side of my body. These are for propping up my arms, or for placing under my bump and between my knees when I want to be on my side. Yes. It’s a lot. Yes, it sounds insane. Yes, my poor husband has to climb over a mountain of pillows any time he wants to kiss me good night. And Yes, I need them all. So do yourself a grand favor, and just accept the pillows. Zzzzzzzz.

5.) A Great Lipstick – Color, color, color!

You need to head to Sephora and have an expert help you find the perfect lip color to add to your daily arsenal. And go bold, my bump sister, go bold! I find that when I’m feeling exhausted (pretty much every day), or I’m feeling a bit blue that nothing fits (hello boobs!), or I just need to feel a little oomph of fertility goddess-ness, the perfect lip color helps me get there. I adore this one from Milk Makeup – color “Wifey.”

The Secret To Having A Great Day Morning Routine

Do you ever feel like there is just no time? No time to get any one thing done. No time for yourself. No time for your friends. No time for your passion project.

I read once that the prolific author Nora Roberts started writing for the first time during a snowstorm while she was a SAHM and her kids were housebound. Writing became her outlet. I love that story. But now that I’m a SAHM, I seriously do not get how she did it! How, Nora, how did you manage to write your novels with your crazy kids running around needing snacks and drinks and snacks and games and snacks and help and snacks!? And also with a household to run. And a husband to talk to. And friends to text a waving hand emoji to every now and then because there is just NO time for a longer conversation?

It really feels like there’s no time during the summer months when your beautiful, well behaved children are out of school. Those once too brief few hours while the kiddos were gone now seem like glorious eons of freedom that you would gladly give your right arm for. (Ok, maybe your right leg because your right arm is too busy making snacks.)

Well enough! We must take back control. And while I concede that during this time in our lives there are so many things that are out of our control (hello early wake ups, sick kiddos, and cranky husbands), I will fight for the few things we can control. And that starts with creating your Morning Routine.

By religiously sticking to my morning routine, I set myself up to have a great day where I know I’ve accomplished at least one thing that is just for me.

A morning routine gives you structure and a feeling of control over an already chaotic day. Start creating your routine now, during these last few weeks of summer, so that when fall comes and school blessedly starts again, you’ll be ready to stick with it. You’ll be committed to it. You’ll realize how important it is for your sanity, for your creativity, and for your ability to face the day with a smile and a positive attitude. 

Are you ready for your new morning routine!? Here we go, mama…

Step 1: Get up 30 – 60 Minutes Before Your Kiddos.
I know, I know. Yeah. Right. But seriously…just try it! We are almost always too tired after the kids go to bed to do anything that is just for us at night. And TV is a way too attractive offer – curse you, Big Brother! Morning is the most productive time of day to take time for you.

Step 2: Hydrate.
Drink a glass of water before you do anything else. Keep it on your nightstand, and suck it down before you even get out of bed. Cleanse yourself from the first moment of the day. Every mentor I’ve had says to drink half your body weight in ounces of water, and these people are super successful. We should listen to them 🙂 Water is the elixir of life, and it makes you feel so refreshed right as you wake up.

Step 3: Read your Daily Soul Session.

Read it every day to get your thoughts moving in the direction you want them to continue – positive, happy, present, and mindful. Mindfulness is a muscle. Step 4: “You” Time.
Now spend the rest of your blessed quiet time doing something just for you. Journal, meditate, sit on your porch with a cup of coffee, goal-set, read, stretch. Do whatever it is that fuels your inner pilot light and clears out the cobwebs in your brain. This makes room for creativity, positivity, and endless possibility. But absolutely no laundry, dishes, or cleaning allowed, lady. This about you and your inner sense of happiness. This is about feeling like you have accomplished something that is only for you – not for mom, not for wife, not for friend, not for daughter. For YOU.

Turn Your Day Around In 5 Minutes

You know that feeling. That sinking, ball of lead in the pit of your stomach, suddenly so exhausted feeling that you can hardly keep your eyes open. Maybe it was some bad news. Or maybe another mom at school drop-off made you feel not good enough. Maybe you’ve been refereeing your kids since 6 am and you have just HAD it. Maybe a simple “what do you want for dinner” conversation with the hubby turned into a code red, “do you ever listen to me?” fight.

Ugh. Isn’t it amazing how a day can turn bad quicker than your toddler can decide they suddenly hate pizza (whaaaaat? Who hates pizza?! My kid. That’s who.)

And that just ain’t right.

We work too hard and have too many positive intentions to let a day go to waste with negativity or depression or simple boredom. The truth is, we feel negative emotions much stronger than we feel positive emotions, so we have to fight back, sisters! We can’t let the sad win! We have to prepare for these moments like Wonder Woman prepares to take down the god Ares. With a killer set of over the knee boots and some hair that makes Rapunzel jealous, obvi. What we need is an arsenal of positivity at our fingertips.

We’ve got your back, mama. Here are 7 ways to turn your day around in 5 minutes or less.

1.) Keep an uplifting book on your kitchen counter. Whenever you feel the heaviness creep in, stop whatever you are doing. Pick up that book and read a few pages. Let the words give you a swift mental kick in the booty, and feel it change your thought process immediately. The inspiring words of self-love, gratitude, and determination will fill you up again. 2.) Create a positive vibes only Pinterest Board and title it “Inspiration”. Collect images with all the things that inspire you to be the best woman you can be. Where do you want to travel? Find images of that. What quotes make you feel strong and empowered? Find pictures of that. Don’t pin anything that leaves you feeling wanting, only allow those images that make you feel strong, sexy, determined, and happy. Then scroll through that board when you need a sweet ‘lil cheerleader on your shoulder. Check out our “Inspiration” board to get started.

3.) Download inspiring songs that never fail to make you dance or make you smile.Make sure they are on your phone, and turn one on whenever you need a pick me up. Start with “Kinder” by Copper Wimin. Or simply turn on a Pandora or Spotify station that will keep an ongoing stream of inspiring music playing. No one ever had a bad day belting out the entire Wicked soundtrack from beginning to end. Trust me on this one.

4.) Make an “Affirmation” page in the notes on your phone. Write down your personal mission statement as a woman, your reasons WHY you want the life you want, and some simple positive phrases that remind you to choose joy. Then when you’re feeling blue, read through these affirmations and pick one that resonates with you at the moment. Repeat it to yourself over and over until you begin to feel lighter.

5.) Breathe! Set your timer for 3 minutes and close your eyes. Start to deepen your breath. On the inhale, think the sound “sat” (rhymes with not). On the exhale, think the sound “nam” (rhymes with mom – fitting!). Sat nam means “truth” or “truth is my identity.” Keep saying this phrase, coinciding with your inhale and exhale until your timer goes off.

6.) Drop down and do a few vinyasas. This exercise is even better if you are in the middle of Target and your child is screaming for yet another Paw Patrol Pup. The looks alone from other people as you are in Down Dog will be satisfying enough.

7.) Do not, I repeat, do NOT get on any social media until the crisis has passed. I’m serious. Just say no to the Insta and the FB and the Snapchat and the Twitter in your life. When you are struggling with something, it is not the time to go into other people’s worlds of photo shopped perfection. This is a time to work on you. Alone. It is the time to focus on your goals, your gifts, and your authenticity. To remember why you love yourself and your life. To heal whatever is aching and just take a break from all the noise and distraction around you.

Ah…feels better already, am I right? You CAN do this. You have the ability to turn a heck no day into a heck yes one. But our thoughts have power. And like attracts like. So if you don’t prepare for the bad moments, you’ll never defeat them. And come on, if we pack diaper bags the size of Texas in preparation for a possible armageddon, why not pack some tools for our own personal mini armageddons as well?

8.) YogaGlo Subscription

YogaGlo is a monthly subscription online yoga website. Their teachers are phenomenal, and they have so many different options for classes – level, duration, yoga style. It’s only $18 a month, so even if you only take 1 class month, you’ve paid for it! Most yoga classes are drop in $22 or more these days! And as a BUSY mom, I rarely have time to find childcare, get in the car, get to yoga, take a 90 minute class, drive home – you get it. But I am able to take 30 minutes here and there to take a YogaGlo class.

Insecure: not confident or assured; uncertain and anxious (Google)

If there is one word that I come back to again and again as a mother, as a woman in this stage of life – it is insecure. I see the signs everywhere. This lonely, isolating, and sometimes viscous word creeps into our lives and consumes us on a daily basis.

We have to fight back. We have to be brave. We have to win.

This word means something different to every woman I come across. But it is equally destructive in whatever form it takes:

  • She is insecure in her ability to be a good parent.
  • She is insecure about what she said to that person yesterday.
  • She is insecure that she isn’t contributing to her family as much as she should.
  • She is insecure that she is still breastfeeding
  • She is insecure that she never breastfed.
  • She is insecure that her sex life is not where she wants it to be.
  • She is insecure about her body after having two kids.
  • She is insecure about the lines on her face.
  • She is insecure that her daughter got in trouble at school.
  • She is insecure that people will think she is weird or judgmental for either making her own or not making her own baby food/wipes/organic food/insert WHATEVER here.
  • She is insecure that her husband wonders what she does all day long at home.
  • She is insecure that her in-laws secretly find her lacking.
  • She is insecure that her home isn’t clean enough.
  • She is insecure that if she takes even one break or moment for herself in a day, then she will be seen as lacking.
  • She is insecure that if she says no today someone will think it’s always no.
  • She is insecure in her decisions, always second guessing herself and worried about disappointing someone. Everyone.

And on and on. And on.

Aren’t we tired of this? Haven’t we had enough? Where in the world did we get this idea that we had to be perfect in order to be beautiful? To be happy?

I mean I can see the roadmap. The route I took to get to this exact place in my life. Being a mother, a wife, a woman is challenging. We are the caregivers, the lovers, the teachers, the shapers. How could we not get a little anxious, a little overwhelmed at all those hats to wear?

This is the mantra I want everyone to repeat over and over again until it sticks in our brains like super glue and dazzles our soul every single time the insecurity tries to sneak in. Because comparison is the first step toward envy, and envy is the beginning of insecurity. And insecurity breeds the worry and anxiety that we are simply not enough.

We have to fight back. We have to be brave. We have to win.

If I could send a love letter to every struggling mama, to every woman in the world right now, it would say this…

Dear Brave Soul,

I see you. I see how hard you try every single day. I see the struggle. I see the hope. I see the reinvention that comes with growing older. I see the courage it takes to try to be better today than you were yesterday.

 I hear you. I hear your silent cries of loneliness. I hear the constant longing to be something other than the uniquely authentic person that you are. I hear the whispered promise to be better today than you were yesterday.  

I feel you. I feel the anxiety that you will do something or say something wrong today. I feel the hopelessness that you’re stuck in this stage, this phase of life. I feel the fear that always threatens to consume you. But I feel the strength that you will be better today than you were yesterday. 

There is beauty in the waiting.  

Forgiveness is the only path to grace. 

Humor will lead to happiness. 

God only gives you what you can carry.

Don’t let insecurity get the best of you. Choose to physically banish the thought the second you feel it come in. Be a light of love to everyone you see. Find happiness and peace with the decisions that you have made…and watch the world lighten up around you. It is in your power to do so. You can do it.

Fight back. Be brave. And win.

You’ve made plans for the day in hopes to entertain your 4 year old, all the while praying that your infant can hang without a real nap until the afternoon. It’s gonna be great, you think when one of your mama friends organizes the adventure. And then you wake up that morning immediately second guessing your decision and trying to think of ways to get out of going.  The baby needs her structured naps excuse should work-lol. However, you already told your kiddo you are going to the zoo……the zoo that’s an hour away…..the super special zoo where you get to feed giraffes.  So you’re going.  No getting out of this one.

The next hurdle for me is getting out the door on time with everything I need.

I am terrible at this. I mean really awful. Since Kaylie came along (our 9 month old) I am not sure I have arrived at A N Y T H I N G on time. And lets not talk about how not only am I late, but inevitably I forget something (or many somethings) every. single. time.  (I cannot even think about the time I forgot the paci on a 4 hour round trip adventure. CRINGE!)

Well not anymore my mama warriors.  I have started to implement a new plan this summer. One that not only helps me get out the door a little closer to on time, but actually with a lot less stress than before. Now, I have just started to do this and I am sure ALL OF YOU already do this, but it’s been working for me so I thought I’d share.

Step One: Stop thinking about the reasons its going to be tough to go.

You’ve committed to the plans and once there it will be worth it.  So stop wasting precious time and energy on thinking about not going.  YOU ARE GOING. (you all may not need this step, but I am always second guessing my decisions and plans-so this is a must for me. 🙂 )

Step Two: Assess the Adventure.

What will you need to bring? For the big kids? The Baby? And don’t forget what you need Mama! Plan it out in your head or write it down like me.  It takes an extra few minutes, but then I’m already feeling more organized and less stressed.

Step Three: Pack up everything you can the night before.

YES. Do it.  At the time this usually feels really annoying to me.  I’d rather be relaxing on the couch with my husband after the kids are asleep. BUT, taking 10 minutes the night before to get organized makes the morning run so much more smoothly.

Step Four: Get up 15-30  minutes early.

Take this time to pack the lunches, check the diaper bag, have a cup of coffee and get ready for the day!

Step Five: Build at least an extra 30 mins in to your morning schedule.

Something ALWAYS happens in the morning as I am trying to get out the door.  The baby has a blowout, the big kid takes an extra 20 minutes to get dressed because he just HAS to pick out his clothes and get dressed himself.  If I have to leave by 9:00am, I tell myself the departure time is 8:30 and we seem to be getting places on time with much more regularity these days!

Getting Your Toddler To Listen Without Yelling…

Getting my 3 year old to listen without threatening (and following through with) time out every 5 seconds is an all day long challenge over here. WOW. Who is with me?? (raise hand emoji.)

And that gets so old, doesn’t it? Between finding activities that will keep her occupied for a while, and creating fun adventures out of simple activities like nature walks—I’m running out of energy to feel like I’m constantly disciplining her. I’ve been talking with my husband and friends and sisters and we all agree. No-one likes the daily toddler fight of not listening.

The Listening Toddler Sticker Chart!

This has worked really well for us so far! Reminding her that she gets a sticker every time she listens and does what she’s asked the first time has been extremely motivating for her. And threatening her with taking away a sticker when she is behaving poorly works too.

When she gets 5 stickers, she gets a treat.

Sometimes that is half a graham cracker, sometimes it’s an m&m. The real treat is that she’s happier, I’m happier, and we have a craft project to make together at the start of each week that takes up a whole 5 minutes of the day! ha. Here’s how to make your chart:

1.) Get out a big piece of paper. Divide it into each day of the week.

2.) Pick a different color marker or paint for each week day. Color the column of that day in its respective color. That way your child can ask you  which color to put the sticker on. If it’s Tuesday, I’d say, “put the sticker on the orange paint!”

3.) Find some stickers she likes and place them in a spot accessible to her. Then when she listens well, you tell her “GREAT JOB! Go get a sticker!!” And when she gets to 5 sticker—BOOM! Treat.

Nothing is a magic fix when it comes to toddlers.
