The first step is to choose the number of players and determine the amount of money each player is willing to put into the pot. In fixed-limit games, bets cannot exceed the amount established by the rules of the game. If a bet exceeds the limit, the player must fold and take no further action. If the bet is made by more than one player, the amount of the bet is split between all the players. The number of players can vary by country. However, the ideal number is six to eight people.
During each round, each player must match the previous bet. If a player makes a bet that he or she believes to be correct, the bet is called a match. If a player does not make a bet that he or she is correct, the bet is said to be a bluff.
The dealer is the person who deals the cards to the players. The dealer may shuffle the cards, but has the last right to do so. The dealer is responsible for dealing the cards in order. Once the dealer has finished, he or she will give a shuffled pack to the opponent for cut.
The dealer is also responsible for determining the order of the bets. Typically, the deal order is determined by the dealer’s button, which is a white plastic disk. A poker hand can be made up of any combination of the five cards in the deck. The rank of the poker hand depends on the game’s rules. It is generally inversely proportional to the mathematical frequency of the hand. If two identical hands are tied, the tie is broken by the unmatched cards.
